Des artistes appellent à mettre fin au siège de Gaza par Israël lors de la crise de coronavirus 

Philip Pullman, Ariane Ascaride, Peter Gabriel et 500 autres signataires appuient l’appel d’Amnesty International à un embargo militaire sur Israël « jusqu’à ce qu’il respecte pleinement ses obligations selon le droit international ».

Alain Damasio, Ariane Ascaride, Peter Gabriel, Rokhaya Diallo et Viggo Mortensen Jr. figurent parmi les artistes appelant à mettre fin au siège de la Bande de Gaza par Israël lors de la crise de coronavirus.

Dans une lettre ouverte publiée ce mercredi, ils écrivent : «  Les près de deux millions d’habitant-e-s de Gaza, en majorité des réfugié-e-s, sont confronté-e-s à une menace mortelle dans la plus grande prison à ciel ouvert du monde ».

Les premiers cas de coronavirus à Gaza sous blocus ont été rapportés en mars. Les organisations humanitaires et de défense des droits humains, tant palestiniennes qu’israéliennes ou internationales, ont appelé à la levée du siège israélien pour que Gaza puisse remédier à ses pénuries sévères d’équipement médical.

Les écrivain-e-s Annie Ernaux et Bernard Noël, les chorégraphes Régine Chopinot et Nacera Belaza, le sculpteur Antony Gormley sont aussi des signataires de la lettre, qui déclare : 

« La pression internationale est nécessaire de toute urgence pour rendre la vie à Gaza vivable et décente. Le siège israélien doit s’arrêter. Et plus urgent encore, une épidémie potentiellement dévastatrice doit être évitée ».

Marquant les deux années depuis qu’Israël a tué soixante manifestant-e-s palestinien-ne-s à Gaza, les signataires — qui incluent le romancier irlandais Colm Tóibín, l’artiste Kevin Beasley, le cinéaste Gérard Mordillat, l’artiste plasticien Ernest Pignon-Ernest et les co-récipiendaires du Prix Turner 2019, Tai Shani et Lawrence Abu Hamdan — continuent : 

« Ce qui arrive à Gaza est un test pour la conscience de l’humanité. Nous appuyons l’appel d’Amnesty International à tous les gouvernements du monde pour imposer un embargo militaire sur Israël jusqu’à ce qu’il respecte pleinement ses obligations selon le droit international ». 

Le producteur et directeur de films James Schamus, la danseuse et chorégraphe Emmanuelle Huynh, Peter Mullan et Liam Cunningham ainsi que les artistes Charlotte Prodger et Helen Marten se joignent au poète pionnier K. Satchidanandan, à la romancière et scénariste Candace Allen, au compositeur et producteur Brian Eno et aux musiciens Roger Waters et Massive Attack pour signer la lettre, qui conclut :

«  Nous considérons que les droits garantis aux réfugié-e-s par la Déclaration universelle des droits humains doivent être respectés également pour les Palestinien-ne-s. 

Dans ces temps de crise internationale, nous devons défendre la justice, la paix, la liberté et des droits égaux pour tous, indépendamment des identités ou des croyances. Même si nous restons confiné-e-s à la maison, notre responsabilité éthique ne devrait pas l’être. »

Bien avant que l’épidémie mondiale de COVID-19 ne menace de submerger le système de santé déjà dévasté de Gaza, les Nations-Unies avaient prédit que la bande côtière sous blocus serait invivable dès 2020. Avec la pandémie, les presque deux millions d’habitant.es de Gaza, principalement des réfugié.es, sont confronté.es à une menace mortelle dans la plus grande prison à ciel ouvert du monde. 

Il y a deux ans aujourd’hui, des snipers israéliens ont tué soixante Palestinien.nes de Gaza, hommes, femmes et enfants, dans une totale impunité. Les manifestations de masse hebdomadaires de la Grande Marche du Retour, en grande majorité pacifiques, actuellement suspendues à cause de la menace du coronavirus, ont été confrontées à une violence brutale. 

Bien avant la crise actuelle, les hôpitaux de Gaza étaient déjà arrivés au point de rupture par manque de ressources essentielles, bloquées à cause du blocus exercé par Israël. Son système de santé ne pouvait pas faire face aux milliers de blessures par balles, ce qui a conduit à de nombreuses amputations. 

Les premiers cas rapportés de coronavirus dans la bande de Gaza densément peuplée sont donc profondément perturbants. Comme plusieurs professionnel.les de santé l’ont récemment écrit: « Les épidémies (et évidemment les pandémies) sont d’une violence disproportionnée pour les populations accablées par la pauvreté, l’occupation militaire, la discrimination et l’oppression institutionnalisée. »

Pourtant le blocus d’Israël entrave la circulation des fournitures médicales, du personnel et de l’aide humanitaire fondamentale. La pression internationale est nécessaire de toute urgence pour rendre la vie à Gaza vivable et digne. Le siège d’Israël doit être levé. Et plus urgent encore, une épidémie potentiellement dévastatrice doit être évitée.

Ce qui arrive à Gaza est un test pour la conscience de l’humanité. Nous soutenons l’appel d’Amnesty International à tous les gouvernements du monde pour imposer un embargo militaire à Israël jusqu’à ce qu’il respecte pleinement ses obligations selon le droit international.
